OSM stimulates the growth of fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and Kaposi’s sarcoma cells, while it inhibits the proliferation of certain normal and tumor cell lines. Additionally, OSM promotes the release of cytokines like IL-6, GM-CSF, and G-CSF from endothelial cells and enhances low-density lipoprotein receptor expression in hepatoma cells. Structurally and functionally, OSM shares characteristics with LIF, IL-6, and CNTF. It is biologically active on murine cells.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe human OSM gene encodes a 252 amino acid polypeptide with a 25 amino acid signal sequence for secretion, forming a 227 amino acid precursor protein.
