Gibco™ Fetal Bovine Serum, Value, Heat Inactivated is a fetal bovine serum designed to provide an excellent value for basic cell culture, specialty research, and specific assays. It is heat inactivated to inactivate complement, which can participate in cytolytic events, contract smooth muscle, release histamine from mast cells and platelets, and activate lymphocytic and macrophage cells. Heat-inactivated serum is recommended for applications including immunological studies and the culture of embryonic stem cells, insect cells, and smooth muscle cells.
The serum is triple-filter sterilized using a 0.1 μm filter and is prepared using an aseptic process. Heat inactivation is performed at 56°C for 30 minutes, with mixing to promote heat distribution and reduce protein aggregation and flocculant precipitation. Heat inactivation can also help achieve bottle-to-bottle and lot-to-lot stability by neutralizing factors that can vary between lots.
Gibco™ Fetal Bovine Serum, Value, Heat Inactivated is supplied in a One Shot format and can be added to culture media according to the requirements of the application and cell line. Thermo Fisher states that FBS is commonly added to culture medium at 2–10%, with 10% used for most basal media, while some applications may require up to 20% supplementation.
This heat-inactivated serum is suitable for basic cell culture, specialty research, and specific assays where complement-inactivated FBS is required. It is particularly applicable to immunological studies and the culture of embryonic stem cells, insect cells, and smooth muscle cells, as identified by Thermo Fisher.
