Lucius Labs RPMI is a high-performance basal cell culture medium originally developed at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute for the cultivation of human leukaemic cells in suspension. This versatile medium has since been widely adopted for culturing a broad range of mammalian cell types, making it a cornerstone formulation for cultivated meat research and bioprocess development.
This formulation is chemically defined, ensuring precise compositional control and excellent batch-to-batch consistency. The medium is animal-origin-free and serum-free, eliminating the variability and regulatory concerns associated with animal-derived components. It contains 2000 milligrams per litre of glucose, providing a balanced energy source for metabolically active cells. The formulation does not include L-glutamine or sodium pyruvate, allowing customisation based on specific cellular requirements.
RPMI's chemically defined and animal-origin-free characteristics make it particularly suitable for cultivated meat applications, supporting the proliferation and differentiation of muscle, fat, and connective tissue cells. Its proven performance in suspension culture systems aligns well with scalable bioprocessing requirements for cultivated meat production.
The powder format requires refrigerated storage at 2-8°C, with a guaranteed shelf life exceeding six months. Liquid formulations are sterile-filtered through 0.2-micrometre membranes, ensuring microbiological safety for critical cell culture applications.
