Customising Chassis Cells for Structured Meat Products
For cultivated meat R&D teams, producing structured whole-cuts like steaks or fillets requires more than just growing cells. The key lies in chassis cells - muscle, fat, and connective tissue...

Most products require no additional agreements. Cell lines and certain biological materials require a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) on first purchase from each supplier. We handle this digitally - both parties sign online before shipment. Subsequent orders from the same supplier proceed immediately.
Smart MCs Poly-L-Lysine Methacrylate (PLMA) is a specialised, animal-origin-free (ACF) hydrogel designed to address the complexities of scaffold-based culture and 3D bioprinting. It provides a chemically defined, biocompatible environment that supports high-density cell proliferation and differentiation—essential for scaling cultivated meat production from R&D to pilot volumes.
The primary differentiator of the PLMA matrix is its proprietary formulation, leveraging methacrylated poly-lysine derived from the antimicrobial polypeptide e-PL. This material is engineered for rapid, light-based cross-linking, allowing polymerisation into a gel state within seconds. Researchers can precisely tune the stiffness, size, and surface charge, offering the flexibility to optimise microenvironments for specific bovine, porcine, or avian cell lines.
Validated for 3D bioprinting and tissue engineering, PLMA maintains excellent cell viability and structural integrity. Performance data confirms its inherent antimicrobial activity against common contaminants, such as E. coli and S. aureus, providing an additional layer of security in long-term cultures. Its biodegradable, xeno-free composition ensures alignment with the technical and ethical requirements of the cellular agriculture industry.
Supplied as a kit including LAP photoinitiator in light-protective bottles. The standard polymer-to-LAP ratio is 0.5 g PLMA per bottle with 0.025 g LAP. The material is highly light-sensitive and must be stored in a dark place; it remains stable at room temperature for 3 months, at 4 °C for 12 months, or at -20 °C for up to 18 months. Long-term storage at -20 °C is recommended to ensure maximum shelf life.
Cellag Bio is the structured intelligence layer for cultivated meat R&D — scattered published research distilled into decision-ready records: what worked, what failed, the likely cause, and what to do instead. Before committing budget to a medium, reagent, or cell line, check the evidence behind it: real experimental outcomes and failure modes, not marketing claims.
Search by media, reagent, cell line or species (e.g. "Beefy-9" or "B8") to find the records that use it.
