DMEM vs F12 for Cultivated Meat Cell Lines
For cultivated meat R&D teams, I’d screen DMEM, Ham’s F12 and a 1:1 DMEM/F12 mix before choosing a basal medium. None is complete on its own: your cell line, supplements...

Gibco™ DMEM/F-12 (Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium/Nutrient Mixture F-12) is a widely used basal medium designed to support the growth of a broad range of mammalian cells, including MDCK, glial cells, fibroblasts, human endothelial cells, and rat fibroblasts. This 1:1 mixture combines the high concentrations of glucose, amino acids, and vitamins from DMEM with the wide variety of components found in Ham’s F-12.
This specific formulation is modified with L-glutamine, HEPES, and phenol red. The addition of HEPES provides effective buffering to ensure pH stability, while the sodium bicarbonate system requires a 5–10% CO₂ environment to maintain physiological conditions. Produced in cGMP-compliant facilities, Gibco™ DMEM/F-12 contains no proteins, lipids, or growth factors.
Each batch is manufactured to meet rigorous quality standards for sterility and performance, making this medium an ideal foundation for serum-free media systems or custom supplementations (commonly 10% fetal bovine serum).
This medium is stable for up to 12 months when stored at 2–8°C and protected from light. It is shipped at ambient temperature and is suitable for both research use and further manufacturing applications. For research use or further manufacturing. Not for diagnostic use or direct administration into humans or animals.
