Gentamicin sulfate is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from Micromonospora purpurea that provides effective bactericidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and mycoplasma. It serves as a versatile choice for preventing bacterial contamination and as a selective agent in cell culture, molecular biology, and advanced drug delivery applications.

This formulation (Cat. No. G3632) is supplied as a white to off-white powder with a potency of ≥590 IU (units) of gentamicin base per mg. The recommended working concentration for eukaryotic cell culture is 50 μg/mL, prepared in water. Gentamicin is freely soluble in water and practically insoluble in ethanol.

The antibiotic exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, causing codon misreading and inhibiting peptidyl-tRNA translocation from the acceptor site to the donor site. It also disrupts the outer membrane of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by displacing natural cations, leading to membrane destabilization and pore formation. Gentamicin is active against a broad spectrum of bacteria, including strains resistant to tetracycline, chloramphenicol, kanamycin, and colistin.

Gentamicin sulfate is suitable for use in cell culture media, bacterial selection systems (gentamicin resistance genes), and advanced drug delivery research. Store at 2–8°C in a tightly closed, dry container; solutions are stable under these conditions for extended periods. This product is intended for research use only and is not for diagnostic or therapeutic use in humans or animals.
