cAlbumin is a functional plant protein isolate designed as a low-cost alternative to albumin (recombinant albumin, bovine serum albumin) for use in serum-free culture media formulations. It performs multiple key functions including lipid transport and shear protection in 3D culture.
Developed by Dr. Andrew Stout at Tufts University, cAlbumin is produced by isolating a functional protein fraction from canola meal, the side stream of canola oil production. cAlbumin is 100% xeno-free and is a natural plant extract (not a product of recombinant protein technology). Supplied as a sterile aqueous concentrate, cAlbumin can simply be resuspended directly into culture media at the target concentration (typically within the range 0.05 - 0.8 g/L).
