The Kbiotech Photobioreactor is a specialised bioprocessing platform designed for the cultivation of algae, cyanobacteria, and other photosynthetic microorganisms. As the cultivated meat industry explores algae-based scaffolds and nutrient-rich media additives, this system provides the precise environmental control—including light intensity, wavelength, and photoperiod—required to optimise biomass and protein yield.
Built on Kbiotech’s modular BioBook architecture, the platform supports scalable volumes from 100 mL to 20 L. It addresses the unique challenges of photosynthetic bioprocessing by replacing mechanical impellers with air-lift or bubble column mixing. This gentle aeration eliminates shear stress, protecting delicate cell structures while ensuring efficient gas exchange and uniform light distribution throughout the culture.
The system features advanced LED modules with programmable spectral composition across red, blue, green, and far-red channels. Controlled via SmartBioFlex™ SCADA software, researchers can simulate natural day-night cycles or implement continuous lighting to accelerate growth. The software is 21 CFR Part 11 compliant, ensuring all experimental data meets the rigorous audit standards required for regulatory-aligned R&D.
The Photobioreactor is available in single, twin, or multi-vessel configurations (up to 12 parallel units), making it an ideal tool for high-throughput screening of media formulations and light conditions. Integrated sensors monitor pH, dissolved oxygen, and CO₂ levels, while optional PAT modules allow for real-time biomass monitoring via optical density.
Suitable for research and process development of algae-derived ingredients, carbon capture studies, and the production of bioactive compounds for cellular agriculture.
